Habib, S., and Hinojosa, M. (2016). Representation of Fracking in Mainstream American Newspapers. Environmental Practice 18 (02), pp. 83-93.
The article provides a content analysis of 349 articles from the online versions of The New York Times, The LA Times, and The Washington Post. Our findings reflect that unconventional drilling (fracking) is presented by elite news outlets as an issue fueled by conflict, responsibility, and environmental concerns. Our findings also show that fracking is framed mostly as a water usage and pollution issue while the scientific literature offers evidence of issues that spans vastly beyond water; such as human health, air pollution, and seismic activities. As the second author of the study, Dr. Melanie Hinojosa provided statistical analysis and wrote the analysis section.
Habib, S., and Hinojosa, R. (2016). Doing Grounded Theory With Video=Based Research. Journal of Ethnographic and Qualitative Research, 10(1) 42-52.
We offer reflections on how researchers can use video in qualitative research by providing insight into the conceptual, practical, and organizational methods for video data analysis using a Grounded Theory Approach. As the second author of the study Dr. Ramon Hinojosa provided theoretical expertise in various qualitative methodologies.
Habib, S., and Hinojosa, R. (2016). Video-Based Research in Grounded Approaches: Practical tips and insights. in Handbook of Grounded Theory, Claudia Equit & Christoph Hohage, Eds.
This chapter was accepted through a peer-review process. We begin this manuscript with an overview of video as data, and then outline the analysis process using an example from our own research. We conclude by addressing the practical aspects of conducting research with video.
As the second author of the study, Dr. Ramon Hinojosa provided expertise in the Grounded Theory Method by revising the manuscript with critical comments. He added substantial paragraphs, and his writing was implemented throughout the manuscript.

Habib, S., Williams, J., (2015). Doing Well.
This film is currently in progress. The objective is to submit to The Journal of Video Ethnography. The JVE is a peer-reviewed academic journal that aims to advance the social scientific use of video/film as a method for exploring human society, systems, and cultures and as a medium for presenting the findings of those explorations. “Doing Well” is an exploration of life within 2 miles of unconventional drilling, or fracking. This work is done in collaboration with Jeff Williams, and still images will comprise a series for gallery submission.
The Journal of Video Ethnography (JVE) seeks to fill a gap in scholarly publishing and establish rigorous guidelines for evaluating and creating an ethnographic film. Peer review is the fulcrum of scientific discourse; without it, standards and production guidelines will never materialize in an emerging field. All submissions to JVE are peer-reviewed in a manner identical to and as rigorous as that of print journals.

Grounded theory provides researchers with a systematic way of developing theory, however the process can also be confusing for those attempting it for the first time. This study aims to clarify the analysis process and the kind of information that results from grounded theory (GT) research. Novice researchers and those embarking on a grounded theory study for the first time can benefit from understanding the various approaches and epistemologies; therefore, it is important to become familiar with all traditions before choosing a specific path.
